"History Of
Margate Country Club"
The idea for Margate
Country Club was born in the early 1950’s and was the brainchild of
enthusiastic Golfers under the initiative of the town clerk, Mr. GC Mourant.
Subsequently, a nine hole
course was constructed on a part of the “Grass Flats” Farm in a horseshoe
shape around the Margate Airport, by the late Mr. Laurie Mandy. Once the
plans for a Clubhouse had been approved, the Bense brothers started work
with materials bought and supplied by the Members.
The Club was
formally inaugurated in 1956, and was officially opened by Mr. Stan Herbert,
then the Mayor of Margate. In 1973, the wheels were set in motion to develop
the course into 18 holes.
The Margate Airport
was closed and the Council kindly made this land available to the club.
Margate Country Club took its place as one of the major clubs on the Lower
South Coast.
In 1990, Peter
Matkovich was engaged to re-design the course. It took eighteen months of
hard work and effort to produce the current “gem” the course now is.
Since then, several other
improvements have been made to improve amenities and to cope with a large
increase in membership.
